2024 CanAm Flute Competition Winners

Siliang Wang
First Place Winner ($1,000. Wm.S. Haynes Prize)

“Preparing for this competition was not easy, but that was exactly what made it such a valuable experience. Doing the recordings pushed me to continuously polish my performance, to think critically about my interpretations, to master the extended techniques, and to internalize the music into a convincing interpretation.”

Sophie Lanthier
Second Place Winner ($600. KJ Woodwind Repairs)

Preparing for the CanAmerican Flute Competition gave me the opportunity to immerse myself in some truly remarkable repertoire. Lowell Liebermann’s Soliloquy challenged me to explore deep lyricism, phrasing, and subtle variations in colour, while Robert Aitken’s Plainsong pushed me to experiment with the flute’s unique and often demanding extended techniques. Together, these pieces offer just a glimpse into the rich and diverse world of North American solo flute music, a repertoire that truly deserves to be heard on the world’s largest stages.

Karen Kobayashi
Third Place Winner  ($400. Long & McQuade Prize)

The CanAmerican flute competition provided me with a great motivation and goal over the summer. I especially enjoyed working on Plainsong by Robert Aitken. Although it was a great challenge, it ultimately allowed me a greater understanding of my instrument. It also taught me the importance of control when approaching extended technique!
